This original en plein air painting was created on location near Big Thicket National Preserve, capturing a quiet and unexpected detail along a rural fence line.
At each fence post, a different porcelain animal had been placed—small, weathered figures spaced along the edge of an open field. In this piece, a porcelain cow becomes the focal point, leaning outward as if observing the landscape alongside the viewer.
Painted outdoors and in real time, the work reflects the immediacy of the moment—balancing the wide openness of the pasture with the close, curious presence of the figure. The contrast between the natural setting and the artificial, slightly whimsical objects creates a sense of place that is both grounded and quietly surreal.
Loose, responsive brushwork emphasizes light, atmosphere, and the fleeting nature of the encounter, preserving the feeling of discovering something unexpected in the field.
