Painted en plein air in the dense, humid understory of Big Thicket National Preserve, this piece captures a native pitcher plant emerging from deep greens and shadow. The plant’s luminous yellow-green form contrasts sharply against the darker forest floor, creating a quiet focal point that feels both inviting and a little dangerous.
Working on location, I focused on the way light filtered through the canopy and caught the slick surface of the plant, giving it that almost glowing presence. It’s a small moment from the trail—easy to miss if you’re not looking closely—but one that holds a surprising amount of character.
