Mountains from the Tailgate
Medium: Acrylic on canvas panel
Size: 8X10 inches
Location: near Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico
Year: 2024
Painted from an overlook near Valles Caldera National Preserve, this landscape was created while standing in the bed of my truck, using the top of the cab to hold my easel against the wind. The view stretched across layered hills and dense patches of trees beneath a wide New Mexico sky.
Like many plein air paintings, this one was as much about improvising the setup as painting the landscape itself. The elevated vantage point from the truck bed created a perfect view across the valley while the changing light moved quickly across the hillsides.
Painted outdoors from observation during my residency at Valles Caldera National Preserve.
